Mokarram Hossain

Swansea University UK

Dr. Mokarram Hossain is an associate professor at the Zienkiewicz Institute (ZI) for Modelling, Data and Artificial Intelligence at Swansea University. The ZI has been regarded as the world’s centre of excellence in computational modelling for five decades. After graduating from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dr Hossain obtained a Master’s degree in Computational Engineering (2005) from the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany). He obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2010) from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, under the supervision of Professor Paul Steinmann. He moved to the UK, first to Northumbria University as a lecturer in 2015, and then to Swansea University as a senior lecturer in 2017.

Dr Hossain’s research interests lie in the broad and interdisciplinary areas of soft polymeric and multifunctional active materials ranging from materials synthesis, experimental study to computational modelling. He has worked in the areas of biological tissue modelling and characterisation of polymeric materials under thermoelectromagnetic loading. He has made numerous fundamental and cutting-edge contributions in the areas of polymer curing modelling, electroactive and magnetoactive polymers, experiments and modelling of hydrogels. He has been awarded several research grants, including from the UK Research Council (EPSRC), the Royal Society and industries for energy harvesting and characterisation of soft materials using electroactive/magnetoactive polymers.

Dr Hossain won the UK Association for Computational Mechanics (UKACM) best postdoctoral paper award. He was a Mercator Fellow of the German Science Foundation (DFG) and an ASEM-DUO Fellow of South Korea. Dr. Hossain has published more than 120 papers in journals in materials, mechanics and computation, such as JMPS, CMAME, NPJ Nature Computational Materials, Applied Materials Today, Renewable Energy Reviews and is guest editor of a special issue of the European Journal of Mechanics-A/Solids.
